Snuneymuxw First Nation Strengthens BC’s Tourism With Casino Acquisitions

To boost tourism on the Snuneymuxw First Nation, they have acquired and will operate the River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, and Chances Maple Ridge. This diversification, designed to ensure long term prosperity, and to within the tourism framework of British Colombia, will enhance the position of the Snuneymuxw First Nation in the tourism industry.

This is the first step in the maturity of the Snuneymuxw people and in the extension of the traditional territory. Now they have consolidated their position to be the primary Indigenous-owned gaming operator in Canada. This is in line with their enduring commitment to inspire the tourism and hospitality industry within the province

A Vision for Sustainable Tourism Growth

The acquisition of the River Rock Casino Resort, one of the largest casino resorts in Western Canada, and Chances Maple Ridge, a cornerstone of the local community, reflects the Snuneymuxw First Nation’s commitment to sustainable tourism development. Both properties are well-established destinations within British Columbia, known for their entertainment offerings, hospitality, and dining experiences, all of which contribute significantly to local tourism.

Located in Richmond, the River Rock Casino Resort has been a popular attraction for both locals and tourists alike since its opening in 2004. The resort offers a comprehensive range of services, including gaming, live entertainment, a luxury hotel, and dining options. It has long been a key driver of tourism in the Richmond area, drawing visitors from across the province and beyond.

Meanwhile, Chances Maple Ridge has served as a vital part of the tourism infrastructure in the Maple Ridge region. Opened in 2013, the casino provides entertainment and employment opportunities to the local community while also attracting visitors who seek a more relaxed, community-oriented atmosphere compared to larger urban centres.

Creating Jobs and Boosting Local Economies

The acquisition of these two significant assets aligns with Snuneymuxw First Nation’s broader goals of economic self-sufficiency and creating job opportunities for its people. Tourism, one of the province’s most important economic sectors, is expected to see further growth as a result of this investment.

Government sources indicate that the tourism sector in British Columbia has long been a driving force in its economic growth, with millions of visitors flocking to the province each year to experience its diverse attractions. The addition of these casino resorts to Snuneymuxw’s portfolio strengthens the region’s appeal as a key tourism destination, attracting both domestic and international visitors.

By securing ownership of these high-profile properties, the First Nation is positioning itself to reinvest profits into other community development projects, ensuring long-term economic stability and growth for its people. Local governments have expressed support for the acquisition, acknowledging the positive impact it will have on tourism, local employment, and regional development.

Enhancing Tourism Infrastructure Across the Region

Snuneymuxw First Nation’s acquisition is also expected to enhance tourism infrastructure in the surrounding areas. With an increasing number of visitors coming to the River Rock Casino Resort and Chances Maple Ridge, there is significant potential to boost the local economy. The Snuneymuxw leadership aims to leverage this growth by investing in additional tourism projects that showcase the cultural richness and natural beauty of their ancestral lands.

The region already benefits from a well-established tourism network, with world-renowned attractions such as the Vancouver International Airport, Stanley Park, and a variety of outdoor activities. Snuneymuxw’s strategic positioning within this network will enable the Nation to capitalise on British Columbia’s thriving tourism industry, further attracting visitors seeking diverse entertainment and cultural experiences.

Collaborative Efforts and Sustainable Future

As part of their strategic vision, Snuneymuxw First Nation has also worked closely with neighbouring Indigenous communities, including the Musqueam and Katzie Nations, who hold traditional territories near the casino properties. This collaboration reflects a commitment to mutual economic development and shared success, creating opportunities for all parties involved.

The transfer of ownership to Snuneymuxw is expected to enhance the overall tourism experience for visitors by combining modern hospitality with a deep respect for cultural traditions. As more visitors come to experience the offerings at River Rock and Chances Maple Ridge, Snuneymuxw is committed to fostering an environment that reflects its values of sustainability, community growth, and cultural preservation.

Strengthening British Columbia’s Tourism Industry

This is a milestone in the tourism industry for the province – the acquisition of the River Rock Casino Resort and Chances Maple Ridge by the Snuneymuxw First Nation. Snuneymuxw has strategically worked to broaden its economic foundation by investing in tourism and working with other Indigenous Nations which enhances the province’s tourism offering and ensures the long-term prosperity of its people.

These acquisitions will allow Snuneymuxw to further strengthen its leadership position in British Columbia’s tourism industry. The First Nation is expected to drive growth, create new jobs, and continue to strengthen the economic health of the region for years to come.
